LAKE GARDA

LAKE GARDA

Lake Garda is the biggest lake in Italy and it covers an area of 370 skm. The Lake is made up of three regions: Lombardia, Veneto and Trentino Alto Adige. The imposing Mont Baldo is between the lake and the Adige river on the east side. The north part is narrow and overlooked by mountains while the south part is much wider and surrounded by hills giving a softer landscape. The lake is a popular tourist resort and is visited by numerous people all year round.

Etruscan or Roman, Byzantine or Lombard, Venetian or finally Italian, Sirmione has always remained true to itself: the Pearl of Garda, Catullus 'venusta Sirmione or Carducci's flower ofthe peninsula'. Sirmione has been famous since ancient times for its health-giving spa water.

The peninsula on which it stands sticks out into the water about 4 Km and is one of the most enchanting places on the lake. In Roman times villas were built there including that of the poet Catullus who wrote of the beauty of the lake in his verses.

Nature and history: Sirmione is full of art treasures and history starting with the Castle through which one must pass to reach the town center.

The  Lake Garda is the largest Italian lake, with an area of about 370 sq km. A hinge between three regions, Lombardy (province of Brescia), Veneto (province of Verona) and Trentino-Alto Adige (province of Trento), it is parallel to the Adige, from which it is divided by the Monte Baldo massif. To the north it is narrow and funnel-shaped while to the south it widens and extends, surrounded by hills that make the landscape sweeter.

The lake is an important tourist destination, and is visited every year by hundreds of thousands of people.

Etruscan or Roman, Byzantine or Lombard, Venetian or, finally, Italian, Sirmione has always been, above all, itself :  the Pearl of the Garda , the "venusta Sirmio" of Catullus, the carducciano "Fiore de le Penisole". Sirmione famous since ancient times for its generous thermal waters, located on the southern shore of Lake Garda, in correspondence with a long and thin peninsula that extends into Garda for about 4 km, enjoys wide fame thanks to writers such as Catullus , Stendhal, Lawrence and Goethe who celebrated its artistic and environmental beauties in their writings. It is one of the most enchanting places on the lake, from which you can enjoy the splendid panorama of the two shores: already in Roman times there were villas, including that of the poet Catullus, who in his verses sang the beauty of these places . Today Sirmione is one of the most important tourist resorts on Lake Garda, the historic center is characterized by narrow streets with stone walls, capable of giving visitors romantic and suggestive views. Nature and history: from the Scaligero Castle to the archaeological area, which is located at the far end of the peninsula, Sirmione contains incomparable art and history treasures.

These are the so-called Grotte di Catullo, a construction thought to belong to the Latin poet Catullus and which preserves frescoes dating back to the 1st and 2nd centuries BC
Also not to be missed is the Scaligero Castle. Located on a rock, it is completely surrounded by Lake Garda. Its structure is typically medieval, with an imposing facade characterized by three high towers decorated with battlements. Impossible not to admire the Rocca di Sirmione, an important example of a dock fortification, which originally had the purpose of defending the border area between the Scaligeri possessions and the Republic of Venice. A visit will also yield a splendid visit to the lake. The Maria Callas Palace is also interesting to see. It is located in the center of the town, in Piazza Carducci. Dated to the end of the 18th century, it is currently an important exhibition venue. Also in the historic center are the church of

S. Maria, with the cloister, the church of San Pietro in perfect Romanesque style and the small church of Sant 'Anna.
